The Labour mayor of London called for urgent clarity after more than 50 protesters, who said they were demonstrating peacefully, were arrested in London on Saturday
A Labour spokesperson pointed to the comments from shadow Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, who said police had to provide “accountability” over concerns raised and defended the protesters’ right to demonstrate.
“I think that’s an important thing to do and if the police have been disproportionate or have got things wrong it’s important, as we have seen with the Casey Review, that they hold their hands up and acknowledge it.”. A No 10 source said policing of the coronation was “independent”. They added: “Peaceful protest is a vital part of a democratic society and is a long standing tradition but that must be balanced with the rights of others to go about their business without serious disruption to their lives.”
“These arrests are a direct attack on our democracy and the fundamental rights of every person in the country.”
