Rutgers gave the world its first extended glimpse of its quarterback of the future. Right now, though, the short-term outlook is still muddled.

Oh sure, Greg Schiano and his players arrived here convinced they could beat Wake Forest, and despite a mountain of disadvantages in the nine days after their unexpected opportunity, they held their own in a competitive first half., Schiano approached this surprising bowl game — the most prestigious in 152 years for the Scarlet Knights — as if it was the spring game back in Piscataway.
“I always tell people the biggest jump I think for a quarterback is from high school to college,” Vedral said. “You go from a simple offense in high school to college, and I think he’s done a really good job of diving in, learning, asking questions, and I thought today was kind of cool to see him take on a bigger role and take on a bigger menu. And I thought he handled it really well. I was proud of him and we’ll get back to work soon.
This much we know: Rutgers preserved Wimsatt’s redshirt this season, which means he’ll have four years of eligibility. And, unlike a year ago when Vedral was anointed the starter as top rival Art Sitkowski transferred to Illinois, Schiano used the words “heck of a competition” to describe the quarterback situation heading into spring.
