Sculptural assemblages by Matthew Monahan on display at the Nasher Sculpture Center.If the irrational jumbles of dreams could be rendered in three dimensions, they might look something like the haunting Matthew Monahan assemblages recently acquired by the Nasher Sculpture Center. Gifts from several donors, they’re on display in the former gift shop space to the left of the entrance.
Therein lies a problem: With windows barely shaded, or not at all, and with minimal artificial light, it’s hard to make out some of the detail. With light coming from behind, only careful study ofThe Los Angeles artist makes much of foam, folded and crumbled construction paper and glass vitrines, with bases of drywall. They look, and are, fragile.
