The shattered retirement dreams of millions of women have been blamed on the Government's failure to properly communicate state pension changes.

These adverts from 20 years ago meant to tell women pension age was rising. They featured talking dogs and games of Monopoly - would you have realised? The shattered retirement dreams of millions of women have been blamed on the Government's failure to properly communicate state pension changes – as a damning report revealed yesterday.

Many of the 3.8million affected – including Women Against State Pension Inequality campaigners – were not made aware that their retirement age was being raised until it was too late. Talking dogs discussing pensionsAmong the most bizarre was the use of two 'working dogs' sitting on a beach looking out at the sea discussing pensions – as they do.

Readers were then encouraged to send in a coupon or call a phone number to request a free information pack. Women were also targeted with an odd 'Monopoly-themed' campaign - including newspaper advertorials - that used images of the classic board game to attract attention Needless to say, the advert was even less alluring than playing an actual game of Monopoly with temper-tantrum children on Boxing Day. And for many, the message was lost.

'Apparently, from 2020, women will be getting their state pension age at 65 - the same as men. As women tend to live longer than men, I suppose it makes sense and it's much easier to plan for the future when you know what changes are going to take place.' The DWP said: 'The Government decided more than 20 years ago that it was going to make state pension age the same for men and women in a long overdue move towards gender equality. This change was clearly communicated via award-winning campaigns, direct mailings and advertisements across television, radio, newspapers and magazines.'

Leaflets headlined 'What every woman needs to know about pensions' and 'Pensions for Women' were given out – as well as a 'Women's Pension Pack' that was available through the Pension Service. Between 2003 and 2006, millions of women below retirement age received letters with an estimate of what their state pension would be in retirement. But the letters did not contain any information about the rise in state pension age from 60 to 65.Baroness Ros Altmann, a former pensions minister, said: 'These letters should have included clear warnings to women, so they knew not to expect to receive their pension at 60. This was the biggest of all communication failures.
