Sir David Sterling says 'for too long we have neglected our rivers and lakes, with human health, wildlife and economic prosperity suffering as a result'
Ulster Wildlife has called for urgent action to improve Northern Ireland's water quality after an Audit Office investigation slated the state of local lakes and rivers.
The auditor’s report said that despite initiatives to improve water quality, in 2021 less than a third of Northern Ireland’s rivers had good ecological status, representing no improvement since 2015. The charity has called on the NI Executive to seriously rethink and reprioritise options for the way forward. It comes a a week after we revealed Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd said NI Water is competing for funding from other sections of his department despite highlighting the impacts that would cause - including new homes not being built.
