Iris rhizomes are available from area gardeners and retail nurseries. Planted 18 inches apart, they fill in the available space on most sites in two to three years and can be thinned out to provide the source of a new planting. The foliage survives in partial shade, but irises bloom best in full sun.
To reduce damage to fruit trees from bacterial diseases over the winter, apply a copper oxide product to the crown and stems on or about Nov. 1. The application will cause the plant to drop its leaves. Insect-eating birds will often be attracted to beef suet even if the material is mixed with hot pepper, but the hot pepper discourages squirrels and rodents from eating the suet. The pepper flavoring limits consumption of the suet to desirable bird species such as woodpeckers, wrens, warblers, mockingbirds and kinglets.Primrose jasmine is another unusual ground cover that is deer-proof. Grown as a specimen in sun or shade, it sends its stems out from the center to form a weeping shape.
