The Red Sox’s already thin pitching rotation suffered another setback on Saturday when Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom announced that left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez is done for the season.
Rodriguez, 27, had tested positive for the coronavirus before the start of Boston’s summer camp. He was cleared to return to team workouts on July 18, but had not been activated because he developed myocarditis — a heart condition — after recovering from COVID-19. “We are confident that he’s going to make a full recovery, and that his long term prognosis is excellent,” Bloom said prior to Boston’s game against the Yankees in the Bronx.
Bloom noted that Rodriguez’s heart is functioning normally and that he will return to the team facilities in Florida and Boston as needed for checkups. But, he said, there isn’t enough time left this season to ramp him back up to game shape.that his bout with the coronavirus had left him feeling “100 years old.” It took him about 10 days before he was able to do any light throwing.
, Rodriguez had been in line to be Boston’s opening day starter. He posted career-best numbers in 2019 with 19 wins and a 3.81 ERA.
