Official figures reveal that the number of deaths from homicide in Scotland has reached its lowest point since 1976, with only 52 deaths recorded in 2022-23. This marks a significant reduction from the previous year and a 52% decrease over the past two decades. The data also highlights a substantial decline in homicide victims among young people aged 16 to 24. The majority of victims were men, with acquaintances being the most common perpetrators for male victims and partners or ex-partners for female victims. The use of sharp objects remains the most prevalent method of killing in homicides.

Official figures showed that in 2022-23 there were 52 deaths from homicide – down from 53 the previous year.

The biggest reduction in homicide victims over the last 20 years has been among young people aged between 16 and 24. The figures, published by the Scottish Government, showed more than half of men who died were killed by an acquaintance, with this leading to 21 deaths over 2022-23. Justice Secretary Angela Constance said: “Every life lost to homicide is a tragedy and my condolences go out to anyone who has lost a loved one in this way.”
