The Old Wharf Tea Rooms in Hickling, close to the Nottinghamshire-Leicestershire border, is planning to transform a moored canal boat into extra capacity for customers

A popular waterside café in a Nottinghamshire village has put forward a novel way to seat more diners. .

The café off Main Street has previously been named one of the best in the East Midlands by the Canal & River Trust’s Waterside Hospitality Awards. Now it is planning to host more visitors by using a wide-beam canal boat as extra seating, with it being 57 feet long and 12 feet 6 inches wide. In a planning document, agent CAMplan on behalf of The Old Wharf Tearooms, said: "The proposed development accords with national, regional and local policy. Heritage will be respected."The development will sustain a valuable community resource. There will be no impact on amenity or highway safety. The site is accessible to a point; the proposal will not worsen this and there may be opportunities to improve the situation in detail.

Those behind the plan said it would boost business at the tearooms, which are considered a "a valuable community and canal-side facility." Planning documents submitted by the applicant said the Canal and Rivers Trust supported the idea as it was an "opportunity to help generate greater use of the canal and facilities".

The venue's planning agent added the use of the canal boat would not cause any safety problems. The planning application is pending consideration by Rushcliffe Borough Council.
