A tragic event unfolded at Amsterdam's main airport, where a person was killed after being sucked into a jet engine. The person became ensnared in the engine of an operational aircraft at Schiphol Airport. Details regarding whether the deceased was a passenger or a member of staff have yet to be disclosed.
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport said in a statement: "Today there was a horrible incident where a person ended up in an airplane engine. Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this. The Royal Military Police is currently conducting an investigation."
KLM Airlines also released a statement, saying: "A fatal incident took place at Schiphol today during which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine. Sadly, this person has died." The airline further stated: "The flight concerned was KL1341 bound for Billund. We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol."
They added that an inquiry into the circumstances is underway and directed any requests for additional information to the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, reports the Liverpool Echo.
