Passengers and crew members reportedly witnessed the tragic death before emergency services rushed to the scene
A person has tragically died at Amsterdam's main airport after being sucked into the engine of a departing plane.
It is not yet clear whether the person, who remains unidentified, was a passenger or an employee. Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, witnesses said there was a "hellish noise" as the person was sucked into the jet turbine.One said: "Many people saw it happen." A Dutch military police source said the plane was taxiing on the runway but had to halt take-off after an irregularity was detected with the engine, The Telegraph reports.
A statement released by Amsterdam Schiphol airport said: "Today there was a horrible incident where a person ended up in an airplane engine. Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this.In a separate statement made by KLM Airlines, a spokesperson said: "A fatal incident took place at Schiphol today during which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine. Sadly, this person has died.
