From WSJopinion: Journalism remains critical, but how’s it doing? In this week’s Future View, college students weigh in.

Oct. 8, 2019 7:18 pm ET Editor’s note: This Future View is about the state of journalism. Next week we’ll ask about China’s boycott of the Houston Rockets, imposed in response to a tweet by the basketball team’s general manager in support of protesters in Hong Kong. “How should the NBA have responded to China? As an American business, what responsibility does it have?” Students should click here to submit opinions of fewer than 250 words before Oct. 15.

We condemn this phenomenon, but we keep tuning in. In truth, the vast majority of viewers want bias with their news. We want to have our opinions confirmed, and if one news outlet won’t accommodate that, there are others ready to pander to our views. Fair and impartial journalism will always be a noble pursuit, but audiences have to want it.There is no doubt that journalism has seen a dramatic improvement in quality over the years.

Another is to present a story in an especially provocative way. “Clickbait” attracts readers by outraging them, rather than offering them reliable information in context. Sometimes this is a business strategy, but in the case of the Covington High School story—in which a smiling teenager wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat was preposterously presented as a national villain—the controversy seemed blown out of proportion for ideological reasons.

It’s probably impossible to report the news with complete objectivity. Nevertheless, I hope the next generation of journalists will choose to refocus on gathering all the facts and presenting them as impartially as possible. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 10% decline in jobs for reporters, correspondents and broadcast news analysts by 2028, and it isn’t hard to guess why.

That’s the doom and gloom. But finding and reporting the truth remains critical to civic life. For that reason, I suspect quality reporting will continue to be valued, even if it takes an unfamiliar form. People in positions of power will always need to be held accountable.Click here to submit a response to the next Future View.
