Anyone who's old enough will remember the nightmare motorists used to endure
It can be incredibly frustrating when you find yourself behind a HGV as you drive along a motorway sliproad.
So, even at the best of times, it can be difficult to get your speed up before joining the motorway. And I'm not talking about speeding of course; it's the advice given to anyone who re-joins the carriageway after pulling onto the hard shoulder - get your speed up before entering the first lane.Fortunately, most motorway sliproads are sufficiently long to allow you to do so, but there are a few where it's nigh on impossible to even get close to 50mph.
Thankfully, the arrival of The Bay Gateway, improving the links to Morecambe and Heysham, included a new, longer and straighter sliproad but the original one remains at the side of the motorway as if to ensure our gratitude for the investment. Although it's much longer it's reminiscent of the dreaded old Lancaster entry sliproad in its tight bends and as soon as you begin to straighten out you have about three seconds to get your speed up before joining an incredibly busy section of the M6.
