Cardiothoracic nurse Paula Fereday was in the crowd when Adam Johnson suffered a cut to the throat in the game between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers.
An off-duty NHS worker has told of the awful moment she raced onto the ice to help tragic ice hockey star Adam Johnson after he suffered a fatal cut to his throat.
Paula, 53, said she cannot stop thinking about the incident but she took comfort from the fact Adam's family had thanked her for her efforts. When the incident took place in the 35th minute of the Challenge Cup tie, the cardiothoracic nurse instantly knew it was a serious injury. Paula, a Sheffield Steelers season ticket holder, said she held Adam's hand and performed CPR on the ice before he was taken to the Northern General Hospital. The Panthers confirmed he had died in a statement released the following morning.
Adam's death has led to an outpouring of grief across the ice hockey community. Thousands of people attended a memorial event at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham on Saturday, November 4. A vigil was also held at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield, where the incident happened. Ice hockey teams around the world have also held their own tributes before games.
