The map was put together based on Google searches for bed bug-related issues
Nottingham is among a number of major UK cities where the most searches for bed bug-related issues were recorded online. As reported by the MailOnline, researchers from Merlin Environmental have used Google data to piece together a map showing the areas with the most number of searches.
Officials reportedly scoured through Google search trends for the last 12 months to January 2022, in a bid to find out how frequently the terms 'bed bugs or 'bed bug treatment' were used in the Google search engine. The amount of searches were divided by the number of people in the area to work out the percentage of the population the searches accounted for. The researches found London - which they categorised on the map as having a 'very high infestation - had the highest amount of searches per capita with 266,400 searches, equivalent to 2.97 percent of the population Googling bed bugs.Manchester, Leicester and Bristol also fell into the same 'very high infestation' bracket.
The pests have been in the news recently following an infestation in Paris, and firms in London have warned the spread of the blood-sucking insects is 'out of control'. Tony King, owner of Pied Piper Pest Control, said they had been found in offices and cars, as well as homes. Those attending the Rugby World Cup have also shared itchy stories of encounters with the bugs which are small, brown insects close in size to apple seeds, reports the MirrorOnline. Bed bugs thrive in warmer weather, meaning climate change is likely to contribute to increasing numbers in the future.
