With five managers in 18 months and a failing academy, it will be a miracle if Marti Cifuentes keeps QPR in the Championship

I played in England's 2019 World Cup win - here's why it's gone so wrong this timeknows that more than any other division. Seven new managers arrived over the course of the summer and a quarter of the league had made a change before the end of October.

But that only offers a part-explanation; Ainsworth was a symptom rather than cause of QPR’s accumulating problems that now constitutes crisis. You do not lurch between managerial styles unless you have failed to identify what methodology is likely to work best. QPR have quickly become a reactive football club rather than a proactive one and this is not the league in which to be chasing your tail.

But during that summer, QPR appeared to pivot from their strategy. A run of 28 points from 14 games at the end of the season likely persuaded the club’s hierarchy that a promotion bid was possible. Ideally, a flourishing academy covers that shortfall – that was part of the plan after all. During the latest league defeat, Osman Kakay was the only QPR academy graduate in the team and he’s now 26 .

What gets you through all this, for none of it is unique to QPR, is definitive leadership. When you fall short of ambition with the masterplan, the plan itself offers succour. Fall short having lurched away from it and you are left with nothing but the bitter fumes of regret. QPR have benevolent owners, but that’s not a synonym for leadership and it’s not an acceptable replacement either.
