Newcastle’s top four charge has slowed but Eddie Howe is confident ‘subtle tweaks’ can reignite season
“We are not here to do anything other than try to win the game we are competing in and we don’t want to be the team that everyone looks at and thinks of as good losers,” Howe said, reflecting on that ill-tempered night.
“Possibly it may have helped us in some strange way in that you go through that experience and you’re desperate not to feel that again,” Howe admitted on Friday. The swagger of their pre-World Cup wins over Chelsea and Tottenham hasn’t necessarily been misplaced but things feel more of a grind for a team who are difficult to break down but not nearly difficult enough to defend against of late.
“And it has put us in this position where we have gone on a long unbeaten run. Now we have fallen back into that phase. Results following these draws will dictate how it is viewed. I will say that during a long season in the Premier League, there will be peaks and troughs.”
