“I want to tell you and the Newcastle United players that sportswashing kills.” A group of Newcastle United fans will hand-deliver a letter to Eddie Howe from the brother of a man who faces torture and the threat of execution in Saudi Arabia.

After the north-east club was bought by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, in October 2021, in a takeover worth more than £300m, Howe became their first managerial appointment and after steering the club away from relegation has overseen an astonishing season in which they are now one of the favourites to qualify for the Champions League and have reached a first cup final since 1999.

Howe has repeatedly deflected questions about the human rights record of the club’s owners by claiming he does not have enough knowledge of the situation and insisting he will stick to football. “You may think that in your position you cannot change the behaviour of governments,” Al-Rabea writes in the letter. “I don’t believe this is true. The truth is that your club is owned by a repressive regime and you and your players are employed by them. If you say nothing about the gross human rights abuses and violations we are suffering then this is an acceptance of these violations. If you speak out against them you can save lives.

NUFC Fans Against Sportswashing said in a statement: “Surely Eddie Howe now has sufficient knowledge to speak up on the crimes his employers are committing in Saudi Arabia? “All eyes will be on Newcastle United for the Carabao Cup final. If Eddie Howe took a lead and spoke up for human rights issues in Saudi Arabia, he could make a huge difference and even save lives.”
