Two Scousers have revived a production focussed on prejudice and abuse of power
The people reviving a 1970s play about racism in the police say its themes are more relevant than ever.
People can be searched by police if they have ‘reasonable grounds’ to suspect you’re carrying drugs, a weapon, stolen property or something which could be used to commit a crime. A senior police officer can approve someone being searched without reasonable grounds if it’s suspected serious violence could take place, that you’re carrying a weapon or have used one, or you’re in a specific location.
Despite it being set in London, Sean, 34 from Bootle, argues Sus’ themes are relevant to all audiences, including in Liverpool. He said: “It wasn't localised then and it's still not localised now. So that's where issues that the play is dealing with stem from - themes of prejudice, bullying, discrimination, abuse of power, by the police force and, especially of the time it's set, maybe even, you know, a large part of the general population itself.
Sean also refers to the cases British world championships medallist Bianca Williams and Portugal Olympic sprinter Ricardo Dos Santos. They were handcuffed and searched outside their London home in July 2020. “I know that they are there to help. Since I've turned 18 or maybe even before then, just walking around, I don't necessarily feel safer. I'm more worried, making sure I'm not looking extra ‘sus’, for want of a better word.
