Uvalde’s football program will honor the victim by designating a senior to wear No. 21...
UVALDE — The pain is evident when Justyn Rendon is asked about his personal connection to May’s tragic shooting that rocked Uvalde — his home. It’s understandable. The town of about 3,000 is recovering after a gunman killed 21 — 19 children and two teachers — at Robb Elementary on May 24.
Shortly after the shooting, someone asked Uvalde coach Wade Miller if the team planned to retire No. 21. He called his team captains to get their feedback. Instead of retiring the number, the team decided to select a senior each year to wear No. 21. “We should always pick the best guy to represent these kids,” senior running back Jeyden Gonzales said. “The best, hard-working player who can represent Uvalde and who is Uvalde. … I’m glad Justyn is representing that number because he’s definitely a leader. I’ve never seen him miss a day. He’s always putting in hard work. There’s nobody else for that number but him.”
It’s not an easy task for Miller and his staff. One good sign, Miller said, is the players have been good about focusing on football when they are at the school. “It’s in my heart for a reason because that’s the first school I experienced in Uvalde, and it’s being presented in this light,” he said. “It hurts me, man. I can’t imagine what it was like being there on that day. It’s something I can’t wrap my head around.”Carrizo Springs coach Giovanni Gonzalez said his team plans to honor their opponents Friday by wearing Uvalde decals on their helmets. The Carrizo Springs coach knows the Coyotes will have heavy hearts Friday when they take the field.
