The fact tiny plastic particles are entering human bodies has been well established, but their impact there is less understood. A new paper may have made a 'key advance' in scientists' understanding.
Doctors have sounded the alarm on tiny plastic particles entering the human body after finding people with higher levels in blood vessels had a greater risk of stroke, heart attack and earlier death. Scientists have known for some time microplastics are entering our bodies via the food we eat, water we drink and air we breathe.
'This paper makes a key advance, helping evidence the potential for associated harm.' Dr Danya Bakhbakhi, clinical lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at Bristol University, said the research 'could be a step forward in our understanding'. But she said other factors could be to blame for the health problems, such as socioeconomic data, which has been linked to coronary artery disease.
