Trillions of cicadas will sweep across the US this spring Sixteen states across the US will be swamped by raunchy cicadas in a mass mating event over the coming weeks as trillions of the tiny insects emerge all at the same time. Two different broods of cicadas, one that lives on a 13-year cycle , and the other on a 17-year cycle , will appear from the ground simultaneously in a rare event that happens every 221 years.
Still, if you’re a maths fan like Professor Hannah Fry, this year’s lot makes for an extra special plague. In a video posted on social media, the maths whizz and presenter shared her excitement at the numeric clash. ‘The thing is, for extra drama, all of the cicadas are completely sychronised with one another,’ she said. ‘So every single 13-year-old cicada emerges from the ground, simultaneously flies around, has a massive party, sheds their exoskeletons, makes a massive mess and then dies.
