Opening tomorrow, Greta Gerwig’s movie 'Little Women' makes an old story feel new again
Opening on Christmas, 25 years almost to the day as Gillian Armstrong’s beloved adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott novel, Sony/Columbia’s newest version ofstands on its own, both as a terrific movie and as a worthy adaptation that can stand side-by-side with any other prior version.
The goal is not forward momentum, but an episodic character study with a structure designed for maximum emotional impact. Like the Tarantino melodrama and the Scorsese flick, Gerwig’s adaptation is a gloriously acted, visually scrumptious and often relaxing movie that is, and this is no small thing, a delightful time spent in excellent company.
