Closure of public toilets is leading to a national health crisis, claim campaigners
The closure of public toilet facilities in areas including South Lanarkshire is having a negative impact on physical and mental health, according to new research.
Although there is provision in North Lanarkshire, with public toilets in Brandon Parade, Motherwell, Strathclyde Country Park Watersports Centre, Drumpellier Country Park, and Bothwellhaugh and Coltswood cemeteries, public conveniences in town centres are hard to come by. A lack of public toilets is also having an impact on people’s mental wellbeing, with 21 per cent saying this caused social anxiety.
To raise awareness, Jude recently launched the Golden Loo campaign by installing gold portable loos in London’s Covent Garden in support of the campaign for increased access to clean and well-maintained toilets. “The lack of public loos only adds to the lack of dignity and embarrassment women have and feeds into more social isolation, impacting women’s professional and family lives. These are issues which specialists have known about for many years, but due to the stigma around the bladder, they haven’t been fully addressed.”
Trail-blazing Discover Lanark Business Improvement District set up the Lanark Community Comfort Scheme, which saw local businesses joining forces to provide free public toilets to residents and visitors, with no need to make a purchase. She said: “The great advantage of this scheme is that toilets are available across the town centre and beyond, not just in one location.
Jude’s founder, Peony Li, commented: “Taking a leak is not a luxury, it is a basic human necessity. We know there has been a 14 per cent drop in the provision of public toilets in the last five years and our research reveals that this is significantly impacting the physical and mental wellbeing of our nation, across all ages, at a time when we’re already struggling: post-Covid, with an ageing population, rising social isolation and an obesity epidemic.
