Nottingham City Council leader Cllr David Mellen said the money used to fund the play area couldn't have been used for the city's day-to-day expenditure
A new urban play area has opened outside the Central Library as part of the regeneration of the Broad Marsh area - and kids have given it a big thumbs-up. The play area, which is on Collin Street, features specially designed swings, a play trail with timber stepping blocks, balancing walkways, a seesaw and green planting.
"This isn't a statutory service. This is a lovely discretionary thing to have, but our services to look after vulnerable children, vulnerable adults, people who are homeless, and the many other statutory duties we have, have to be made, and therefore some of the discretionary things have to be looked at."
"The lovely planting will grow and develop, making this a very green area and I'm sure children will enjoy the wooden trails, the swings, the seesaw and the safe surface. We want our city to be a child-friendly city and carbon neutral - this all helps."
