TOKYO : Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Sunday that he would take the April economic situation into account when choosing the next Bank of Japan governor, keeping markets guessing who may replace incumbent Haruhiko Kuroda.
The nomination needs approval from the both chambers of parliament to take effect. Therefore, the government needs to decide much earlier to give parliament time to follow procedures to approve Kishida's pick before Kuroda's term expires, analysts say. There's also talk about possible changes to the policy accord between the central bank and the government in which the BOJ pledges to achieve its 2 per cent inflation target at the earliest possible time.
Appearing in a TV Tokyo recorded programme, Kishida said it was too early to comment on whether there was a need to alter the policy accord between the government and the central bank.
