A vote to combat antisemitism turned into a debate Tuesday night as council members discussed rules and future of Confederate monuments.

The legislation outlaws light projections on buildings without permission from the property owner and carries a fine of $2,000 and up to 60 days in jail. The bill does not mention the antisemitic messages in order to be “content neutral” and protect free speech rights, meaning it makes all projections without permission illegal, not just one type or by one entity. But, over the past week, individual council members expressed discontent over how it came about.

She did not approve of the antisemitic messages, she told council, but she needed to address the “double standard” involved in how quickly council spoke out against the light messages without removing Confederate monuments. “Since 2020, we have been coming here asking to please remove Confederate statues,” LaShonda Holloway, a, said during the meeting. “Three years, it’s 2023, we’re still coming here saying take down the statues. Discrimination is wrong by any account.
