In an ACLU-sponsored event on Saturday, a panel of TV show creators, including 'One Day at a Time' co-creator Mike Royce, discussed how television can be used as a tool to ensure Americans are aware of their rights as voters this election year
While the ATX Television Festival has always made sure its programming focused on political and social issues, its ACLU-sponsored panel about voter suppression and election year issues was especially relevant during a weekend where millions of people around the globe have been protesting against racial injustice. Although the annual Austin event cancelled its in-person programming due to the coronavirus pandemic, it presented a deep slate of virtual programming instead.
Filmmaker Safinia and her team did not initially intend to tackle the issue of voter suppression in their docuseries, which airs June 29 and 30 on PBS' POV. They stumbled across it while following five women of color running for office in 2018 and the organizers working to inspire the non-white voters who will soon comprise America's majority.
