As a kid playing under the Friday Night Lights at the Canlan Sports complex, Hughes built the foundation of his game today.
In the shadow of Pearson Airport, nestled just off of the 401, you can find the Canlan Sports complex in Etobicoke. It’s the home rink of the Toronto Marlboros. It’s a modest barn with blue siding and four NHL-sized rinks, and it’s a place that shaped who has become as a hockey player. “I would be imagining what happened if I pretended to remember his first game on defense,” said McLeod. “Generally, it worked. He became that puck-rushing defenseman we didn’t have and it sped up our team’s game immediately. We only had five defenders at the time, so he was getting a lot of ice. It completely changed our team.
