Texas relies on the death penalty far more than any other state, with 573 executions since 1982. Over the last 50 years, Texas has executed more than the next six states combined, and more than a third of the national total.

Texas relies on the death penalty far more than any other state, with 573 executions since 1982. Over the last 50 years, the modern era of the death penalty, Texas has executed more than the next six states combined, and more than a third of the national total. The Death Penalty Information Center, a nonpartisan group that tracks research on the death penalty, estimates there have been 186 death row exonerations in the last 50 years, one for every eight executions.4 percent of people on death row are likely innocent.

Race may also be a factor. Nationally, Black people are sentenced to death disproportionately more than other races: 43 percent of those executed in the last 50 years have been Black, Graves, who now works as a community liaison for the Houston Public Defender’s Office, said news coverage plays a negative role in high-profile cases. Once a suspect is named, their face and the allegations are pasted across headlines and TV screens, making them effectively “guilty until proven innocent,” he said.
