Showrunners of How I Met Your Mother knew how the series would end at the very beginning, but the resulting backlash proved this wasn't the way to go.

How I Met Your Mother's twist ending left audiences frustrated and proved an old TV rule to be a myth. The series spent nine seasons leading up to the moment that Ted Mosby would meet his wife but flipped the bill by killing her character off almost immediately. Since some of the critical scenes of How I Met Your Mother's finale had been filmed nearly a decade previous, it was clear that this had been planned from the start.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Despite being called How I Met Your Mother, Tracy McConnell wasn't in it for long. After she was killed off in season 9, Ted's kids encouraged him to ask out Robin, and he ran off and presented his long-time friend with the iconic blue French horn. The problem is audiences had long since given up on Ted and Robin because they were such a poor match for one another.

The actors that played Ted's kids would have long since grown into adulthood by the time of How I Met Your Mother's series finale, so the scene in which they tell their father that he should be with Robin must have been filmed way back in season 1. This proves that this had always been the showrunner's plan—but the result was worse than if they had improvised.

How HIMYM's Finale Plan Compares To More Successful TV Endings How I Met Your Mother proved that a well-planned-out ending isn't guaranteed to be well received by audiences. Typically, it does mean a more cohesive story, but in long series like HIMYM, it also means that the writers can't allow characters to forge their natural path and see what happens.

On the other hand, series endings like Breaking Bad, in which the showrunners admitted that they had several different ideas in their minds as they approached their final season, struck a satisfying chord with audiences. This gave characters like Walt and Jesse the freedom to evolve naturally and find their own ending instead of trying to force them into a box. Ultimately, these two shows prove that a fixed ending doesn't always mean a good one.
