As a business owner, when you pay for an online advert, you engage with consumers in good faith. Not all ‘firms’ do the same
Sifting through the unwanted, and often fraudulent, internet ‘deals’ is not only irksome but has the potential to cause serious harm. “Social media and search engines are full of dodgy content, like scams. It’s all bad news for honest firms trying to build a profile and customer base online. What is being done to fix this problem?”: Social media platforms and search engines can be wonderfully convenient.
Major platforms profit from selling ad space, which frequently ends up going to scammers intent on defrauding innocent victims. Previousresearch found flawed regulation of fraudulent online advertising is allowing organised crime gangs to generate almost £1m in a single day through fraudulent adverts.
So what is the government doing about making the internet a safer place for both consumers and businesses? The Online Safety Bill is a wide-ranging, which the government says is aimed at making Britain the safest country in the world to go online.campaigned heavily for, is that it will tackle the paid-for scam advertising on social media sites and search engines that causes so much misery for those who fall victim.
Doing so should force online platforms and other players in the advertising ecosystem to protect consumers from fraudulent and misleading adverts. It would also mean honest businesses such as yours don’t fear rogue firms profiting from malicious practices.
