'Even before COVID and the cost-of-living crisis, Housing Associations were providing a range of advice and signposting to help tenants'
More than 80% of social housing providers are making direct referrals to food banks on behalf of their tenants, a survey has found.
The Northern Ireland Federation of Housing Associations , says that housing associations have been playing an increased role in providing support for their tenants who are under pressure with the cost of living, referring them to food banks and helping to secure mental health support programmes. Speaking about the findings, NIFHA Chief Executive Seamus Leheny said: “The level of services and support Housing Associations provide to their tenants and the local community has grown and changed significantly in recent years. Even before coronavirus >COVID and the cost-of-living crisis, Housing Associations were providing a range of advice and signposting to help tenants, including financial and benefit advice, and support for mental wellbeing.
“While Housing Associations recognise the importance of supporting tenants and building strong communities, in many cases our members are stepping in to provide services which should be provided by statutory agencies or to fill gaps where services are not being provided. There are serious concerns about the longevity of this approach, and whether there is more cohesive and strategic means of providing support.
