Partick Housing Association are looking to build on the site formerly home to the historic St Simon's Parish Church before it was destroyed in a deliberate blaze in 2022.

St Simon's Parish Church was destroyed in a deliberate blaze in 2022 with the cost to rebuild the historic site estimated to be at around "several million" pounds.

The B-listed building on Partick Bridge Street was left "extensively damaged" with only four walls remaining after Ryan Haggerty, who was living in homeless accommodation close to the church, set it on fire.Read more: Man dies after collapsing outside Hampden Park following Viaplay Cup semi-final The remains of the third oldest Catholic church was put on the market earlier this year with Partick Housing Association now having secured the site.

The housing association is looking to build 25 flats for social rent if given the go-ahead. An official planning application is yet to be submitted. Partick Housing Association’s Investment Committee Chair, Les Milne said: "We are delighted to have secured the site of the former St Simon’s Church in the heart of Partick. We are currently engaging with consultants and planners on the best way to deliver much needed affordable homes. Our plans will be sensitive to the history of this important site and we hope to share more news in early 2024.
