From fashion brands like ASOS to music giants HMV, some businesses like to hide hidden meanings in their company names
Here we've listed how some of the major brands got their names including B&Q, Tesco , M&S, H&M, IKEA, Aldi, ASOS and B&M. While the likes of M&S are fairly self-explanatory, there are others with acronyms and unique backstories that might just surprise you.
B&Q The year 1969 saw the birth of B&Q, thanks to Richard Block and David Quayle who set up shop in Southampton. Back in the '60s, professional building supplies were mostly sourced from builders' merchants and small hardware shops, with DIY being a pastime for the dedicated few, B&Q's history reveals.
H&M H&M, a high-street fashion retailer, was set up in Sweden in 1947 by Erling Persson. Originally named Hennes , the store initially only sold women's clothing. ALDI The German budget supermarket Aldi first made its appearance in the UK during the 90s. It was originally established back in 1913 in Essen by Anna Albrecht, who started off with a small grocery shop.
The original meaning behind the name was 'As Seen On Screen', with the tagline 'buy what you see on film and TV', as it initially sold only imitations of clothing seen in those mediums. This all started with a painting of the same image, by Liverpool artist Francis Barraud A. R. A, titled 'His Master's Voice'. The HMV website reveals that The Gramophone Company snapped up the painting and by 1900, it had become their emblem.SONY The brand name Sony is a blend of two concepts: "sonus" from Latin, which echoes ideas of sound and sonic, and "sonny", a colloquial term in English meaning a young boy.
