The towering forward has been tearing it up in the MLS with Celtic fans sheepish about his exit.
Giorgos Giakoumakis may have left Celtic in February this year but fans have not forgotten the towering Greek forward.
And the headlines of watching current Parkhead star Liam Scales, an ever-emerging presence in Brendan Rodgers' team this campaign, make his full debut for the Republic of Ireland was spoiled by his former Celtic friend with a bullet header at the Aviva stadium to put Greece ahead. Giakoumakis was the subject of much debate from Hoops fans when he upped sticks for the MLS and Atlanta United in a deal worth around £3.5m to a then Ange Postecoglou.
Many of the Parkhead persuasion reckon the 28-year-old, who is tearing it up stateside with 24 goals in his last 56 appearances for both Atlanta and the Scottish champions, wasn't given the full rub of the green. And he left Scales staring down at the turf when he latched on to an unstoppable header after just 20 minutes to hit Stephen Kenny's men with a further Euro 2024 qualifying setback.
And Celtic fans were quick to light up social media when the goal went in, with the overwhelming consensus being the former VVV-Venlo man should still be in green and white. One wrote: "Giakoumakis should never have been allowed to leave Celtic, some header!" Another added: "I’m still gutted we sold Giakoumakis," before one wrote: "Watching this Ireland VS Greece game makes me miss Giakoumakis." Another user added: "Still not sure why Celtic got rid of Giakoumakis." A final user wrote: "Man, Giakoumakis really is world class."
