Jaime Cardinal, 46, of Washington Court House, spent tens of thousands of dollars intended for the operation of the shelter on trips, restaurants and several other items.
CINCINNATI, Ohio — A former bookkeeper who stole thousands of dollars from a domestic violence shelter to spend on trips, clothes, food and other personal items, leading to the shelter’s financial collapse and closure, was sentenced Wednesday to a year in prison.
Prosecutors say Cardinal spent the money intended for operating the shelter on a trip to Disney World and Universal Studios with her daughter. She also made thousands of dollars in purchase from Avon, Thirty-One retail store, and iTunes. In March and April 2016, when no victims were in the shelter, Cardinal and the co-conspirator charged more than $6,000 to the shelter’s debit cards for food at restaurants and grocery stores, car repair and fuel for personal cars, weight-loss supplements, and other personal expenses, prosecutors say.
My Sister’s House received more than $10,000 annually in federal grant funds, including grants under the Violence Against Women Act, the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act and the Victims of Crime Act, authorities say. The grants were intended for salaries and benefits of staff and for shelter operations, including supplies and shelter maintenance.
