Tourists are being urged to avoid certain activities
The Foreign Office has issued a stark warning to Brits planning a getaway to Greece, highlighting the heightened risk of wildfires.
Officials have stressed the ease with which wildfires can ignite and have advised against certain activities to prevent them. They've also pointed out how holidaymakers can stay informed about potential dangers. For further information, see Greece's Civil Protection website . The Press Association reports that according to an updated estimate by the National Observatory of Athens, over the past eight years 174 square miles of forest have been burned in the Attica region that includes Athens, amounting to 37 percent of the region's total forested area.
Causing a wildfire or a forest fire is a criminal offence in Greece – even if unintentional, the Foreign Office warns. If you see a fire, call the emergency services on 112.
