As the novel coronavirus has forced millions of Americans to work from home, employees are doing what they can to meet the needs of their clients and colleagues Sponsored by ForcepointSec

s the novel coronavirus has forced millions of Americans to work from home, employees are doing what they can to meet the needs of their clients and colleagues. If the corporate-approved digital platform is experiencing connectivity and critical application access issues and a big presentation is minutes away, most employees are apt to find a quicker alternative. The problem is that hackers know this, too. were launched by hackers in the first three weeks of March.

“The ‘edge’ used to mean IoT devices, but now it applies to a person’s home office, kitchen, bedroom or even car—whatever quiet location they can find to get work done,” says Moynahan. “This is also true for roles that normally would not be allowed to work remotely but now have no choice, such as engineering and back-office functions like finance.”

“The landscape has changed rapidly,” Moynahan says, “and the question now is: How do you adapt post-change?” “Shadow IT has become a big problem with virtually everyone working at home,” says Raffael Marty, Forcepoint’s vice president of research and intelligence. “For example, if a remote worker doesn’t have access to the company’s file-sharing system, the pressure of getting work done may compel them to use other systems that are more convenient.”

As workers strive to stay productive, the motivation to use personal technology devices and applications intensifies. IT security is aware of this risk but is unable to do much about it, as there is no way to monitor the user’s activities on their personal devices. Assuming IT security could discern unusual user and data behaviors indicative of a cyberattack, the door to the rest of the network would crash down to stop the intrusion dead in its tracks.
