Despite a decrease in fire-related deaths in Nottinghamshire in 2023, the fire service has pledged to learn from four fatal incidents that occurred throughout the year. These tragic events took place in January, twice in June, and once in December, with three happening in homes and one in a vehicle. In comparison, there were seven fatal fires each year in 2022 and 2021. The incidents were discussed at a Fire Authority meeting on March 15.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Damien West said: "It's always a sad report to bring to members to look back at the incidents where we were unable to save people's lives. I think we owe it to those people, their families and the community to make sure we learn from them." He revealed that two of the 2023 incidents occurred in Mansfield, one in Nottingham city, and one in Bassetlaw, with all victims being over the age of 45. Two of these incidents were accidental, one was deliberate, and one is currently under police investigation. Following these incidents, safety advice was given to 620 properties in the affected communities. It was found that 39 homes did not have working smoke alarms, which were then provided by the service. Mr West added: "It's really important to remember that each one of those is someone from our community. Whilst we talk in a lot of facts, it is not lost on any of us around the impact that those incidents have.
