The government is increasing term-time holiday fines that could see parents forking out hundreds for a week-long holiday
Parents who take their children out of school during term time will soon be fined more money. The government announced the increase today, explaining that from August 2024, fines will be upped 33%. The Department for Education said that fines are a 'last resort' and that the increase is designed to help increase attendance rates, as part of the Moments Matter, Attendance Counts campaign. A government spokesperson said: ' Every moment in school counts and days missed add up quickly.
This works out to a total fine of £240. But from August, this will increase to a total of £320. If you’re prosecuted and attend court because your child hasn’t been attending school, you could get a fine of up to £2,500. The government explained: 'Fines are a last resort, and parents will be offered support to help improve their child’s attendance first. 'The vast majority of fines for unauthorised absence are issued for term time holidays.
