Dr. Mike Patrick, a general pediatrician and emergency medicine physician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, spoke to The Dispatch about how parents can prepare for cold and flu season, as well as COVID.
To some degree it’s going to depend on your child’s age and also the exact circumstance. If it’s just a fever for a day or two and the runny nose or cough are present and it’s not COVID-19, you still may not have to see your doctor; it may be a regular cold or flu. The next question becomes whether you need treatment, and for kids the only treatment that’s going to be available is for the flu.
If you have a fever that’s lasted more than three days, it’s probably good to see your doctor to make sure there’s not something else going on, like a sinus infection, ear infection, pneumonia or a urinary tract infection. The other thing is if you have a fever that goes away and then comes back, that can be an indication that something more is going on. Those are all complications of viral infections.
