Sisters Jennifer Wright, 39, and Alaina Wright, 34, along with Alaina’s 4-month-old infant and the sisters’ 14-year-old niece died in the Ocean County blaze.
Neighbors stopped at the house Wednesday where four people died in a fire on Buttonwood Drive in the Lanoka Harbor section of Lacey in Ocean County on Tuesday, Aug. 1.Panicked yells and cries for help filled the normally quiet Lacey Township neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon before the first hints of smoke billowed into surrounding homes.
Five family members including an infant were trapped on the second floor of the home, she said. Just one escaped. “Nobody could be helped,” Buttacavoli said, moved to tears by the tragedy. “It’s very heartbreaking, and it’s very heartbreaking for the whole neighborhood. We’re very tight-knit here.” Buttacavoli said she knows the family well and had previously been inside the home, though it had been a few years. Neighbors had recently complained about the condition of the home with multiple boats, cars and trailers parked on the lawn in front of and alongside the house, she said. The fire spread to some of those vehicles.
