New anti-Isekai flips the tired genre's script.
One of the most overwhelmingly popular trends in manga and anime is the Isekai, or "other world" story, wherein a character is transported to or reincarnated into another world that's very different from reality, but one of the latest works to deal with this genre is taking a decisive step towards the opposite.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT According to reliable X user @MangaMoguraRE, a new comedy series entitled "Morino Wants to Prevent Isogai from Going to Another World" by mangaka Ai Sakai is set to begin in the magazine "Manga Action" soon. The premise of the series involves an Elf girl, Morino, attempting to keep her spacey classmate Isogai from going on an Isekai adventure.
New Series Looks to Subvert the Isekai Genre Isekai series such as That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Overlord, and The Rising of Shield Hero have been extremely popular in recent years, and that popularity led to a wave of copycat series.
Amusingly, Morino is explicitly an elf girl, suggesting that the series already takes place in a fantasy world, and yet Isogai for some reason still dreams of being swept away to another world. Since Isekai are inherently escapist fantasy, Morino Wants to Prevent Isogai from Going to Another World could be aiming to do the opposite by dragging Isogai back to reality and forcing him to deal with his actual life and its problems.
Isekai Need To Reinvent Themselves Whether this new series is any good will just have to wait until its debut, but for now, it's already standing out in a good way. The magazine it runs in is for seinen series, which are aimed at an older demographic than shonen series, so it's likely this story will be taking a more mature tack towards the Isekai genre, despite being a comedy.
