Mike Flanagan's next show revives a horror trend.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT While viewers haven’t seen much from The Fall of the House of Usher yet, writer/director Mike Flanagan’s latest Netflix series already looks like a visual treat. Visuals are central to the horror genre, but there is a diverse range of ways that directors can approach horror when it comes to visual aesthetics.

In The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, writer/director Mike Flanagan took the latter approach with stories whose heavy themes and deep emotions matched their darker color palettes. However, this is not the only visual style that Flanagan has employed over the years.

The Fall of the House of Usher Looks Colorful The early look photos from Netflix’s upcoming miniseries The Fall of the House of Usher are highly stylized, looking more like The Midnight Club’s genre pastiches than Midnight Mass’s more subdued tone. Per Flanagan, The Fall of the House of Usher is “colorful and dark and blood-soaked and wicked and funny, and aggressive and scary and hilarious.

Now, it looks like Flanagan is doubling down on this approach for his Poe adaptation. This could be great news for The Fall of the House of Usher as the miniseries could allow the writer/director to indulge his more over-the-top impulses. While Flanagan’s best work has wrestled with weighty questions of mortality, morality, and family, he is also a world-class horror filmmaker who knows how to scare viewers senseless and provide a satisfying story in the process.

How Fall Of The House Of Usher's Style Compares To Other Mike Flanagan Horror Shows The first look at The Fall of the House of Usher is particularly promising after the similarly colorful, fast-paced The Midnight Club. That playful YA adaptation from 2022 was a visual change from the solemn, fittingly funereal look of Midnight Mass.
