Evanston police urge residents who receive calls claiming to be Sergeant Sophier asking for payment of traffic tickets to not give out any financial information or agree to meet the caller in person.

The Evanston Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam involving fake traffic ticket payments. According to a news release from police, multiple residents have reported calls claiming to be from Sergeant Sophier with the department informing them of past due traffic tickets that needed to be paid to avoid arrest. When callers have tried to end conversations with the scammers, another call spoofing the U.S.

Marshal’s Service or Evanston’s 311 center have come in. The number making repeated calls has been reported as 312-353-5290, according to police, and if called back, a voicemail box is set up to pose as Sergeant Sophier. Evanston police urge residents who receive calls not to give out any financial information or agree to meet the caller in person. For anyone who has fallen victim to the scam, the department encourages them to make a report at 847-866-5000.
