Millions of households will be facing record energy bills from October despite last ditch efforts from ministers to keep down costs.
Network costs are what it costs to get energy to households and businesses, while balancing costs are created when the grid needs to buy additional energy during periods of high demand. Soaring wholesale energy costs helped to push inflation to a 40-year-high of 10.1 per cent last month, ramping up prices for homes across the country. Profits at Harbour Energy, the largest North Sea producer of oil and gas, grew more than 12-fold in the first six months of the year to £1.3bn.
“They need a Lyndon Johnson-style ‘war on poverty’ policy, which is targeted at not just those on benefits, but also the just about managing. There are no easy answers to this, but it will have to be huge.” Mr Sunak warned the forthcoming winter would be “very tough” for millions of households as a result of soaring energy prices.
