Emergency services flood street as police with 'riot shields' spotted in alleyway
Emergency services flooded a Southport street with witnesses reportedly seeing 'riot police' in an alleyway. One witness told the ECHO at around 7pm: "They’ve been here about two hours, around 15 police officers went down the alleyway but they’ve not come back out. There were sniffer dogs and two officers had riot shields.”
Later in the evening, the cordon was scaled down, allowing cars to pass along Shakespeare Street, with a row of shops remaining under the cordon. A worker in a takeaway close to the scene said he was "shocked" to see police descend on the street as he had not heard any commotion throughout the day.
