Eden Project Morecambe is expected to open in 2026 and bring in 750,000 extra visitors to the town every year
The proposed Eden Project Morecambe site has been visited by top Westminster civil servants, Lancaster University and council representatives. It comes as activities continue towards construction work due to begin next year.
Lancaster City Council leader, Labour Coun Phillip Black, has given an Eden Project update in his latest report to the forthcoming full council meeting. In the report, he says the city council’s deputy leader, Green Coun Caroline Jackson, recently met government and Lancashire representatives in Morecambe.
In recent times, Eden representatives say they have been focusing on details such as design costs and fund-raising, to keep the scheme within budget. The government has already committed £50million to the scheme but another £50million is needed from donors and other sources. Planning permission was granted by Lancaster City Council in early 2022 and Morecambe Conservative MP David Morris has also been involved with the Eden scheme and government talks.
Coun Caroline Jackson has a housing remit on the city council cabinet and is establishing a cabinet task force. Elsewhere, councillors on the Overview & Scrutiny Committee are tasked with keeping a close eye on key work across the city council. They could be represented on the new cabinet working group and can also request updates from Eden Project bosses, if they want to.
