A Preston village which has become a hotbed for housing development will see several dozen more properties added to its tally after a new estate was given the go-ahead by councillors.
The proposal attracted seven public objections, which included claims that enough new homes were already being built in the village - and a suggestion that the land should be left free for a possible extension of the recreation facilities at the neighbouring Broughton and District Club.
City council planning case officer James Mercer told the committee meeting that Broughton Parish Council would have taken that decision in order to “manage the growth of the village through a plan-led system rather than speculative development”. Broughton Parish Council’s neighbourhood plan was adopted in late 2018 and has to be taken into account when decisions are made by the city council about planning applications in the village. Neighbourhood plans can allocate additional sites to those in a district authority's local plan, provided that there is evidence to demonstrate a need for them.
Committee member Cllr Carol Henshaw asked whether Wainhomes had considered creating any four-bedroomed affordable housing on the development, but was told by Gareth Salthouse, the agent for the application, that the biggest need in Preston was for smaller units. There will be 10 two-bed and five three-bed affordable properties on the new estate.
